Age of Empires Cheat Codes: Every Game
Every game in the Age of Empires series has its own cheat codes. Some codes carried over from game to game, others only work in a single title. On this page you'll find the best-known codes for each game and a link to the full list. First check which version you're playing: the Definitive Editions and the older releases have different codes and rules.
How do you enter cheats?
The method is the same in every game in the series: during a match, press Enter to open the chat box, type the code and press Enter again. Capitalization doesn't matter in any of the games.
In AoE 1, AoE 2 and AoE 4, codes that spawn a cheat unit place it next to your Town Center. If you don't have a Town Center, the unit won't appear even if you typed the code correctly.
Do cheats work in multiplayer?
Not in ranked matches. In private matches with friends they can work: in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition the lobby host has to turn on Allow Cheats, and in Age of Empires IV cheats have to be allowed in the lobby before the match starts. If the setting is off, the codes do nothing.
Do cheats block achievements?
It depends on the game:
- Age of Empires: Definitive Edition: No, you can still earn achievements while using cheats.
- Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition: You don't get that scenario's medal or the campaign achievements.
- Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition: No achievements or medals for that session. The only exception is the tuck tuck tuck code.
- Age of Empires IV: No achievements or masteries for that match.
Age of Empires IV
It was the first game in the series to launch without cheats. Cheats were added in the Season Three update that came with the Anniversary Edition, and they only work in custom games, in Skirmish and, for some codes, in campaigns.

Every code from the original 1999 game still works, and updates have added new ones on top. Most of the unit-spawning codes don't work in the Return of Rome mode.

Age of Empires III
AoE III's codes are different from the rest of the series: most of them are full sentences. They also work in the Definitive Edition.

Older versions: AoE 1, Age of Kings and The Conquerors
Every code from the original releases is also in the Definitive Editions, but not the other way round: codes added later don't work in the old versions. In Age of Kings and The Conquerors the resource cheats also give 1,000 instead of 10,000.
